The homeowners of this Eden Prairie property had always desired a more functional and usable backyard. The busy family of five enjoy the outdoors and are avid gardeners, and ultimately, they wanted a private, outdoor sanctuary for relaxing, grilling, and having a bonfire. However, all these desires needed to be worked around a majestic oak tree with a wide-stretching canopy in their backyard.
The size and placement of the outdoor “living room” revolved around the oak tree so as not to disturb it, with the simultaneous goal of seamless views to the backyard and flowing accessibility from space to space between the porch, patio, and grill area. The new screened porch was designed to have retractable phantom screens, allowing for a smooth connection to the backyard. The chandelier over the fire pit was found at a garden center, which was then repurposed, wired, equipped with LED bulbs, and strewn from the oak tree—creating a glowing awning above the perfect backyard.
