In 2000, Sarah Buerkley attended an inspirational conference in Minneapolis, and among a sea of eager attendees with closed eyes and open hearts, she was prompted to visualize her “best self.” Within the next few weeks, Buerkley decided to explore her gardening talents further. “After reading tons of books, taking horticulture classes, and surrounding myself with all things related to gardens, I realized I had a special gift that I started to extend to friends and family,” she says. The seed was planted, and from there, it started to grow.
As the founder and CEO of Sarah’s Cottage Creations, Buerkley leads with her heart on her sleeve and has cultivated strong relationships with her crew and clients. She says, “Many of my crew leaders have been with me for over 10 years now, so we are like family.” Located in Stillwater, Sarah’s Cottage Creations is a garden design, installation, and maintenance company and has been servicing clients in the eastern metro for more than two decades. “Our design style is layered, lush, and colorful,” Buerkley says. “We are the experts with plants and pride ourselves on knowing the right plant for the right place.”
As a woman in the predominantly male landscape industry, Buerkley admits that gaining respect in the early years of her career was a challenge. But that never stopped her from flourishing. Spring forward nearly 25 years and, now, she is an inspiration to others. “I recently heard from a few younger women who are also passionate about gardening, and how my influence has helped fuel their spirits to join the industry and even start their own businesses,” Buerkley says. “I have built this business by referrals and long-term customers, and I look forward to growing it into a second-generation family business.”
