Age of the home: Originally built in 1900; remodeled once in 2008
Type of remodel: Whole house
Remodeling timeline: Three months
Remodeling budget: $370,000
Before: The home was dark and compartmentalized, with a three-story elevator taking up valuable living space. The kitchen was small and the basement was a hodgepodge of utilitarian rooms. The finishes were also badly in need of a makeover.
Challenges: Removing the elevator, remapping the HVAC, electrical, and plumbing, relocating the laundry from upstairs to the lower level, and working within a unique double corner lot (requiring a variance from the city).
Unique elements: A reconstructed fireplace surround (mirroring the look of the 1900 original), custom steel shower, barn door, time-worn hardwood floors, detailed woodwork, and reclaimed cabinetry.
After: Modern conveniences blend with rustic elements in this bright and open home, all while remaining true to its original heritage. The remodeled space includes a spacious, expanded kitchen, addition of a pantry and mudroom, reimagined lower level, and calming master bath oasis, perfect for two busy parents after a long day.
