This project posed a design problem like many small city houses do—a small, outdated kitchen. Kimberly Herrick of Kimberly Herrick Design Group worked with the homeowners, who made the jump from the suburbs to a pedestrian-friendly part of Minneapolis, to find the perfect solution: reworking the functionality of the back half of the house by removing a wall between the dining room and bedroom, in turn creating a bigger kitchen with an eat-in dining area and mudroom with laundry and additional storage. Just as the space needed to be reconfigured, it also needed to be brought into 2016 with a blend of classic of modern finishes. White enameled cabinetry and countertops give the room an open feel, while durable dark-stained white oak floors add a sense of warmth. Classic cove molding pays homage to the cove ceiling found in original parts of the home, while the glass tile and stacked rectangular subway tiles reflects an on-trend, modern influence.
