Margaret Jane Design Group (MJDG) takes the business out of architectural and interior design and instead places its emphasis on the people. CEO and principal Maggie Tarr describes her childhood home as her sanctuary, and thus works to create homes, additions, and remodels that reflect how important that sanctuary should be in a client’s life. No project is too big or too small for Tarr, who has been involved in residential architecture for 16 years. Back in a portfolio class circa 2006, she wrote down the following: “Architecture is the backdrop for all of the special moments of life. The vessel that houses what makes our memories. The snapshots of remembrance. Where days begin and end. A quiet place of peace. A sanctuary.” Every one of these ideas is infused into the work she creates with her own business.
MJDG resists the urge to have one signature style by instead exploring all architecture styles that can best serve a client’s aesthetic, needs, and site location. Proportion, space, materials, and light are all fundamental in optimizing each unique environment. “Our firm considers all elements of the project, from floor plans that flow and marry detailed elevations and interiors to the lighting design and fine furnishings,” says Tarr. She also believes that layered, personal, and comfortable interiors are fundamentals to better living. Tarr has had the chance to work on many high-end homes that have been featured on numerous magazine covers and TV shows, displaying the talent and work ethic she has combined with her passion for design. While Tarr has many hobbies, like painting and barre class, her main hobby—and passion—is designing homes. “I am so happy sitting down and putting thoughts onto paper—using 3D software, researching details, wondering how we can be different or better,” she states. With that said, it is only fitting that Tarr’s motto is “Let’s break that mold for the better.”
