The homeowners of this 1922 Minneapolis abode loved their home, but many micro-irritations that came along with occupying a century-old house were becoming too much for them to bear. Mark Peterson and the design team at MA Peterson Design Build heard and resonated with these issues, and the project goals became clear: Update the space to improve functionality and preserve the vintage essence of the structure. However, the process was not without its challenges. The lower-level ceilings were very low, there were structural issues with the footings, and integrating aging-in-place features was desired to ensure a long-term solution for the homeowners. All of these integrations needed to be solved from both a functional and aesthetic perspective.
The house was rich with charm and full of potential, and both the homeowners and MA Peterson saw that. A new floor plan was crafted to tailor to the clients’ lifestyle—incorporating a seamless flow from the living and dining spaces to an outside veranda.
An elevator shaft was included in the design for a future elevator that will offer access to all levels of the home. Throughout the process, Brown Cow Design was also enlisted to handle the interior finishings. The homeowners and design team collaborated to push boundaries and introduce innovative concepts alongside personal touches that contributed to the overall character of the space.
Upon completion, the historic home is truly one of a kind. Mark Peterson cherishes his experience helping the clients. “When you walk in, you feel welcomed. It just fits the homeowners so well,” he says. The collaboration among MA Peterson Design Build, Brown Cow Design, and the homeowners made for a successful project that will stand the test of time for another 100 years.
