Longtime clients and friends of Julian Design decided it was finally time to revitalize the last untouched area of their home: an undeveloped recreation room above the garage. With goals of crafting a sanctuary for relaxation and entertainment, the clients’ must-haves included a dedicated reading nook, storage for their extensive book collection, billiards, a bar, and a cozy spot for movie nights. Julian Design, along with Windmiller Design Studio and contractor McCall Construction, rose to the challenge, executing a renovation that involved lifting the roof for higher ceilings and expanding the footprint to extend over the sun porch.
Keeping the space unique, yet cohesive with the main house, color cues were taken from other areas in their home, while new textures and materials were incorporated to offer an aesthetic departure. The terrazzo stone and copper-look cabinetry were selected as the foundation for the design—lending to the authentic and warm look seen throughout. Lighting played a pivotal role in enhancing the space as well, with a quartz chandelier in the reading nook, wall sconces flanking the TV, and task lighting illuminating both the bar area and billiards table.
Upon completion, the clients say that while they always knew they would love the space, they never expected it to be a place they would retire to every evening. But now, the addition has truly become their daily escape.
