Traditional architecture relies on classical elements and details to define spaces. These creative elements—walls, columns, and headers—become an important visual component of the style. Modern architecture, however, is all about getting rid of those traditional elements. It’s an expression of the same spaces in a more simplified fashion, using vertical masses and horizontal planes to achieve a clean, minimalist look. James McNeal Architecture & Design (JMAD)’s approach to modern design is exemplified in its Wayzata project dubbed “Sophisticated Rambler.” Upon entering through the front doors, bright and welcoming interiors greet family and guests with open spaces defined with soffits and cabinetry massing.
In the great room, tall windows bathe the room in natural light while framing views of the surrounding woods on both sides. Warmth is introduced through wood floors and is carried through to a wood box frame that highlights the fireplace wall and offers hidden storage. The same wood frame is reflected in the adjacent kitchen, effortlessly connecting the two spaces. With design elements remaining cohesive to the other rooms in the home—such as the striking wood-stained element on the range wall that relates to a similar object on the great room fireplace—the kitchen forms intentional relationships with each space and anchors the entire main level. Its nonstandard shape is the most striking component of the design, further merging it into the surrounding living areas.
Then, located off the dining room, the custom-designed porch boasts a glass wall that disappears when the doors are open. With its central location to the kitchen and dining area, the porch brings fresh air and natural light straight to the heart of the home, while drop-down screens protect from the elements. Modern finishes and details complete the space, with painted wood and a raised tile system contributing to a sleek feel that adds to the nature views.
When the JMAD team designs modern homes, they ensure all spaces flow but are also architecturally defined. With its balance of traditional and contemporary elements, “Sophisticated Rambler” exudes timeless elegance from the inside out.
