What began in 2019 as a main-home new build in Wayzata evolved to include a custom-built guest house, completed last year. The clients of this project have family all over the world, with multiple residences of their own located internationally. However, Lake Minnetonka is their home base, and when the summer months come, their Minnesota compound is where their family and friends come to escape. In need of more space for hosting visitors, they recruited Hendel Homes—as well as Studio Brown Bag, Eskuche Design Group, and Yardscapes Inc.—to design and build a 2,680-square-foot guest house.
With a love for modern and international design, the clients desired a home full of unique natural stones and materials. The main home acted as the primary inspiration, with the guest house design emulating the beautiful, clean, modern architecture of the main property. Situated on 9 acres of lakeside land, the guest house also had to be strategically placed on the lot so that it wouldn’t obstruct the views of the main residence but would still feel like it was part of the estate.
Inside, they incorporated as many bedrooms and en suites as possible to ensure ample space for all their guests. But as a boutique owner with her own clothing line, the homeowner also added a showroom to this space, acting as both a store for her products and a living space for extended family and friends. The surrounding nature was a focus of the design as well, with windows framing the lot’s views. Materials were selected from across the world, with cabinetry, wall, and trim sourced from Europe and Asia. Some favorite design features of the Hendel Homes team include the stone-clad fireplace and staircase—both of which center the home.
Throughout the process, Hendel Homes was able to work with various trade partners and designers, each of whom contributed to the home’s elevated feel. But, of course, the most rewarding part of this project was getting to work with the clients for a second time. “We love working with this client and feel honored to be a part of their projects,” says Amy Hendel, principal. “They are wonderful people who we truly value and respect.”
