The story of this 252-square-foot detached multipurpose space in Minnetonka began when the client, a designer herself, reached out to Great Northern Builders (GNB) to craft a versatile retreat that could act as a hangout, quiet space for privacy, and gathering spot for friends and family. Some of the homeowners’ must-haves included an eco-friendly bathroom, a ductless mini split for heating and cooling, and a fireplace to anchor the main room.
With visions of a modern, industrial aesthetic, inspiration was drawn from natural materials, warm wood tones, metals, and the surrounding outdoor landscape. Collaborating closely with the client, GNB brought in custom metalwork, reclaimed wood elements, structural cable and turnbuckle ties, and a commercial-style glass garage door to make the space feel open. The strategic addition of the garage door not only allows the space to open to the outdoors but also drowns it in natural light.
The resulting structure is now known as the “Minnetonka Man Shed.” While the original clients recently relocated to Arizona, this unique project is expected to live on with the new owner, a local musician, who has hinted at transforming it into a music room.
