The earth has a natural static temperature that fluctuates plus or minus 45 degrees. Using that temperature as a constant, Conservatory Craftsmen—in collaboration with architect partner Craft Design Build—designed an eco-friendly greenhouse that uses little to no fossil fuels for heating or cooling—resulting in a comfortable environment for both plants and people year-round.
The inspiration for the design came from the earth, orientation of the sun, and topography of the land. In planning the structure, a “three-pod” design was implemented to maximize solar exposure while ensuring earth-sheltering benefits. Cutting-edge materials and technology, including structural insulated panels, geofabrics, and a GHANT system, work together to optimize energy efficiency and prioritize sustain-ability. Rainwater from the building is collected in a cistern as well, which is reused to water the plants inside. To balance air temperature in the space, an intricate automation system monitors the interior climate and operates windows and blinds as the weather conditions change. Complete with the homeowner’s creative interior touches, the multiuse space is now perfect for both growing and gathering.
