After four months of planning, designing, and ordering materials, every surface of the main level and upper level of this 1938 Cape Cod house in Edina was renovated prior to the homeowners moving in. During the initial meeting in their existing house, DreamMaker could see that they were not afraid of color—and this became the inspiration.
A few must-haves included a more colorful, bright kitchen with efficient storage, and, for the bathroom, a less claustrophobic space that doubles as a powder room. The new kitchen cabinets are tall, traditional Cape Cod white, combined with sea green-stained base cabinets—a color taken from the dining room rug and repeated in the weathered subway tiles of the backsplash. The beautifully colored decorative tiles are a colorful party above the range, handmade of glass on a clay body and individually selected and placed.
An adventurous mix of metals in the room both blend and contrast: Black faucetry, ash-gray cabinet hardware, stainless-steel appliances, and aged brass decorative light fixtures. And for the final color layer, the clients’ own bright utensils and accessories add personality and lift the spirits when working in this room.
In the bathroom, DreamMaker used a show-stopping stone panel on the back shower wall for impact. The beautiful deep ocean blue onyx is the undisputed dramatic focal point of the room. Paired with simple, neutral solid surface shower wall panels and low-profile shower base, these finishes quietly set off the onyx while maintaining a light and open feeling in the small room.
A frameless glass shower door keeps the sightlines clear, and the vanity cabinet is a custom-stained wood burnished with a warm glaze, picking up the color of the veining in the marble patterned floor tile. The scalloped-edge mirror, light fixture, cabinet hardware, and accessories are tones of silver—the perfect touch in what is now truly a guest-worthy space.
