When a pipe burst in their home and the kitchen needed to be remodeled, this Edina family of six wanted a space that was more connected, so when people were in the kitchen cooking and preparing food, they wouldn’t be cut off from the rest of the family and house. They also wanted to keep the 1920s-era classic Mediterranean architectural details of the home and stay true to the era and style while also adding in modern features. The original architectural details of the home were preserved wherever possible, such as the ornate archways and classic trim, and then either emulated or reinterpreted as simpler, cleaner forms elsewhere.
With added pops of color to fit with the fun, eccentricity of the rest of the house, the kitchen itself became a contemporary installation within this classic envelope. For a more modern feel, a waterfall edge was added to the island. Another touch of modern is seen in the appliances, including a glass-front fridge, cobalt blue 36-inch range, concealed hood, built-in microwave, and paneled dishwasher—all of which provide the functions and solutions necessary for this busy hub and active family.
