These North Minneapolis clients wanted to create a backyard that could blend their needs and desires into one cohesive space. The primary goals were to create multiple living areas for their friends and families to come together, as well as a “garden-to-table yard” where they can grow their own food and teach their children about growing and harvesting.
Plantings were chosen to thrive in the sandy soil, and they wanted flowers for cutting and to attract pollinators for maximum food production. Groundcovers were added in the planting beds to act as “green mulch.” These two techniques minimize the amount of mulch needed moving forward and create a lower-maintenance garden where less weeding is required.
For added privacy, columnar evergreens were placed around the property, screening views of nearby homes. The shed—with an attached pergola—provides ample space to store their gear and provides shade from the afternoon sun. The patio space also offers a great level of privacy. Altogether, the thoughtfully designed yardscape and home updates create the feeling of a true outdoor room.
