Cultural Collaboration: IKEA’s OVERALLT Line

Modern African design meets classic Scandinavian style in OVERALLT, IKEA’s latest line. The idea for the collection began a few years ago when the Swedish furniture chain joined forces with Design Indaba, a creative brand run by Interactive Africa, to learn more about the contemporary African design scene. This unique collaboration paired 10 African designers from the fields of fashion, sculpture, architecture, and furniture design with five in-house IKEA designers to create the products. Inspired by the theme of “urban rituals” common across all cultures—things we do and use every day to feel at home—the collection will include bright and bold textiles, tableware, seating, and more, and will be available in stores for a limited time starting in May.
