Tell us what’s special about Mom’s Design Build.

We’re very family-oriented and we take pride in building meaningful relationships with our clients. Many become lifelong friends. On the design side of things, we bring a lot of innovation to the table. We’re always striving to find new solutions and the latest products and technology.

How did you get involved in landscape design?

I started mowing lawns when I was 12 years old, helping out neighbors and making extra money where I could. That turned into working summers at a golf course doing maintenance outside. For a career, I wanted to be creative, but still work with the outdoors. I thought landscape design would be a perfect mix for what I was looking for: Creating outdoor spaces for people to enjoy.

What’s your first step in approaching a new project?

The first step would be learning about my clients and their families on a personal level, like what their style is and how they intend to use the space. When I’m able to understand that, I’m able to put myself in their shoes and envision myself inside the space, and [visualize] how it will function, how it will flow. But getting to know them on a personal level is priority number one.

What really makes a landscape stand out?

How it functions as well as looks. It needs to compliment the architecture and style of the home and be usable at the same time.

What are some ways to add value to an outdoor space?

I think a couple things stand out to me. One is curb appeal. A clean, simple design in your front yard will give your friends and family a great first impression. And as a homeowner, you’ll love to come home to it. There’s that sense of pride when you pull up in the driveway. I also think landscape lighting can create a whole new look and feel. It’s a great bang for your buck. And then there are irrigation systems, particularly in your planting beds. You can keep your plants healthy during the summer, and you won’t even know they’re there. You don’t have to do anything; the plants will just be nice all the time.

What trends are you seeing in landscape design right now?

Things are moving toward being a lot more low-maintenance, whether it comes to plantings or materials being used. I’ve also seen a lot of clients start to show interest in three-season porches and outdoor rooms. We do a lot of those. People want to feel like they’re outdoors, but still be comfortable. Basically, just people bringing indoor amenities outdoors is really what we’re turning towards.
