These clients, second-time Landmark Build Co. customers, had a different lifestyle when they built their first home in Linden Hills—the focus was almost entirely on entertaining. The second time around, with a preschooler and one-year-old in tow, they wanted a family-friendly home, and chose to put down roots in the Edina Highland neighborhood.
The 6,600-square-foot European-style home borrows details from English and French architectural traditions, with a multi-pitched roof, dormers, repeating arches, and a combination of decorative stone and stucco. From the 18-foot tall entryway and custom curved wrought-iron staircase leading to a Juliet balcony, to the design murals and decorative finishes by local artist Carter Averbeck, to the oversized Edina Hornets-themed indoor sport court, the home leaves a lasting impression, says the home’s architect David Zweber of David Charlez Designs. Interior designers Lori Handberg and Mari Jo Mundahl of design firm Studio M Interiors explain the design as part-traditional, part “glitz and glam,” a reflection of the homeowners’ unique personalities.
Highlights on the main level include the study—with built-in bookcases, tartan plaid accents, and a 12-foot ceiling—opening to its own separate balcony; a great room featuring a European-style fireplace; and a kitchen with custom cabinetry, a herringbone floor, and a built-in banquette. A formal dining area and outdoor patio provide additional space for get-togethers and celebrations.
Four of the five bedrooms, including the master suite, are on the upper level, along with an expansive nanny suite complete with a built-in themed playhouse.
The lower level is entertainment-central, with a 40-by-26-foot sport court, viewing area, wet bar with a double island, state-of-the-art A/V system, spare bedroom, and wine room.
This home has the perfect blend of kid-friendly elements, while remaining sophisticated and stylish—a true work of art.
