Age of the home: 61 years
Type of remodeling project: Main floor remodel and addition, window replacement, exterior enhancement
Before: The home’s finishes were stuck in the ‘50s and in need of a makeover. The layout was dated, too, with small, dark, compartmentalized rooms. The new owner wanted a warm and welcoming light-filled main floor, custom kitchen, new mudroom, and a modern master suite; a home infused with European design characteristics.
Remodeling timeframe: Four months
Remodeling budget: $325,000
Challenges: As Highmark Builders was completing their due diligence, they learned that the original home had pilings beneath it, leading to a redesigned addition supported by helical piers (manufactured steel foundation pins), often used in challenging soil conditions.
Unique elements: Upper glass cabinetry, subway tile back, and antique brass fixtures in the kitchen, a cable stair railing to the lower level, and in the master bath—a barn door entrance to a black and white space featuring a unique freestanding tub within a shower.
After: The main floor flows better both physically and functionally, the master suite is bright and spacious, and the mudroom is both stylish and practical, exactly as the homeowner envisioned the finished space.
