Black Dog Homes is a family-owned and operated custom builder with 18 years of experience in the business. Dan Vanderheyden got his start in the industry when he built a family cabin—the project which inspired the launch of Black Dog Remodeling. Soon after, the firm evolved to Black Dog Homes as the company broke into the custom home market. With a yearning to keep the business in the family, Vanderheyden’s sons, Nick and Ben, quickly became involved as well, helping to create the family-based culture that is present in the business today.

The company’s process is highly driven by technology and transparency, which each assist in earning client trust. By building these client relationships, Black Dog has developed a strong reputation as one of the best builders in the Twin Cities. “One of the greatest compliments we receive is a repeat customer years later when they are looking to build or remodel again,” Ben says.

This modern Tudor project is a perfect representation of Black Dog’s building approach and passion for bringing visions to life. By taking the spirit of the home to create a family-friendly design, the team was able to utilize the highest quality of construction and craftsmanship to help these homeowners get the most for their investment.

From the first look, the classic Tudor elements are shown on the exterior, including prominent steep gables with rounded slopes, a custom glass arched doorway, heritage wall lanterns, pops of metal roofing, accented window headers and vents, and detailed exterior brick. In the interior, even more notable features are prominently showcased. The open concept great room, dining, and kitchen feature custom cabinetry and exposed ceiling beams. In the kitchen, two islands—with one dedicated to seating—help highlight a mix of natural materials and finishes that flow into the screen porch overlooking the 35-acre wetland property. White oak floors with character graining are found throughout the main level, effortlessly connecting each room.

Moving upstairs, the white oak grand staircase with metal railings is shown through walls of expansive windows. Above the garage, a bonus space includes a craft room, bunk room, and game room for the family’s five children. However, the lower level is the true entertainment space, featuring a theater with tiered seating and a rec room that flows out to a Phantom Screened patio with a hot tub.

A true labor of love, the collaboration between Black Dog Homes, Haus of Rowe Interiors, Windmiller Design Studio, and the homeowners results in a modern masterpiece that perfectly fits with the family’s lifestyle.
