OA Design + Build + Architecture

Year Built: 1913

Type of Remodel: Whole home

With the last remodel dating back to the early 2000s, this 1913 home fell into disrepair. Upon taking on this project, OA + Design + Build + Architecture discovered that the foundation and original walls of the home were in great condition, but some spaces were oddly configured and would prove to be a challenging whole-home remodel. Taking the family’s lifestyle and needs into consideration, the goals for the main level included a half bath, pantry, mudroom (and place for two large dogs), a spacious kitchen, coffee bar, dining room, living room with replacement and TV, and a sunroom flex space that could double as an office. For the lower level, the owners wanted a home office, movie room, gaming room, and storage space. On the second floor, OA adjusted the width of the foyer and the size of the rooms to better accommodate the owners’ children. In addition, the floors were repurposed throughout, and new trim was milled to match the original. On the back of the home, the new addition is a total departure from the original home. The scale of the home and the space needed for the addition initially presented a problem matching the original architecture—so, OA decided to go the opposite direction with a very contemporary structure. By opening up the back of the home to the dining room, the owners can take full advantage of the southern exposure. The two-story addition also accommodates the new mudroom, expanded kitchen, and new primary bedroom en suite
