Aspect Design Build

Year Built: 1964

Type of Remodel: Whole home

After a full facelift completed by Aspect Design Build, this Bohemian-inspired split-level home has better flow and function, as well as a fresh midcentury feel. Located on a nearly 2-acre lot in Shorewood, the 1964 rambler received all new windows, and the doubled amount of French and sliding doors sharpened the home’s aesthetic and indoor/outdoor connections. Similarly, tearing out the home’s tile floors and installing wide-plank white oak throughout dramatically softened the interior—balancing the midcentury cool with a coastal, organic California vibe. Iridescent black Moroccan zellige tiles and character-grade white oak paneling offer contrast on the fireplace wall. In the home’s everyday spaces, materials repeat but look fresh in a new context. The knotty white oak from the living room wall is also found on the kitchen cabinets and range hood. More zellige tile appears on the backsplash, creating a sparkly, water-reflecting effect. An island with black leathered granite mimics the windows’ geometry and anchors the space without pulling the attention from the tile and wicker light fixtures.
