After moving back to Minnesota from Nashville, the homeowners of this waterfront property wanted an abode with a northern Minnesota “Northwoods cottage” feel. The state might have its fair share of the above, but what makes this Mahtomedi home unique lies within the 6,063-square-foot space—brought to life by none other than Nick Zawadski, owner of Zawadski Homes, and interior designer Joy Robichaud.
When the pair first met with the clients, they expressed their main goal for the four-bed, six-bath home on the shores of White Bear Lake was to not only optimize the small lot but also create unmatched views of the water that bordered the property.
About 10 months later, those goals came to fruition. The finished product features a tranquil master suite, large deck off the dining room, and stunning sunroom—a space only made better by its can’t-beat lake views that enhance the clients’ desired cabin feel. Further, the clients wanted a place to entertain by the lake, and this proved to be the perfect spot. “The sunroom is my favorite part of the house,” Zawadski says. “It’s pretty spectacular with lots of windows, a reclaimed wood ceiling, and full stone fireplace mantle that goes all the way up.”
Throughout the rest of the home, white embellishments and clean white oak floors are elevated with natural accents, creating a subtle touch of rustic flair. Each room is also flooded with natural light that pours through large floor-to-ceiling windows and illuminates the fresh interiors. “It’s a very clean-looking home with some accents of stone to add a pop of color,” Zawadski adds.
But head downstairs and you’ll notice that’s not the only bold color statement: In the lower-level kitchen and bar area, gray backsplash tile and dark wood cabinetry are juxtaposed by a cherry red retro-style refrigerator—a clear focal point amongst the home’s largely neutral color scheme. The basement is rounded out with a sauna, guest bedrooms, seating area, and walkout to the lake—resulting in a quintessential Minnesota home for a returning Minnesota family.
