Half a mile up the driveway, you enter seclusion: White pines create a natural privacy screen to the rest of the 40-acre property in Afton, and as you continue winding your way along a mighty treeline, the house itself comes into view in a sunny patch of the land.
“They wanted it to feel like you were driving up to a Montana mountain home,” builder Hendel Homes says of the owners. The owners also requested a water feature on a mountain—an impressive feat that was then elevated when Hendel Homes and James McNeal Architecture and Design made that waterfall turn into a river that ran under a floating breezeway and into a man-made trout pond.
As the builder says, “They wanted to capture all exterior views but still create a comfortable, casual feel with materials and elements.” The exterior incorporates reclaimed rustic siding and metal roofing, but inside, a modern feel takes over with riffed white oak flooring and clean cabinet lines. Light fixtures from around the world add points of contrast and sparkle, and as you walk through the house, pieces from the owner’s Southwest-inspired art collection complement the magnificent views through the windows.
Everything comes back to the idea of a Montana mountain home, so perhaps it was most important that Hendel Homes and James McNeal made it easy for the homeowners to get a breath of fresh air. A pool was added in the backyard, and a screened porch brings in views of it, the river, and the pond. And, whenever the homeowners need to take a break from work, a door in the home office leads right into nature.
