CITY: Minnetonka
NUMBER OF BEDROOMS: 2
NUMBER OF BATHROOMS: 3
STYLE: Modern island beach house
Situated on an island on the shores of Lake Minnetonka, this home by Charles R. Stinson Architecture + Design is part of the oldest homeowner’s association in Minnesota. Thirty homesites on the island share a rich history of being a summer destination. Now, even though the homes are usually lived in year round, it still feels like going up north. A gravel driveway and wildflower landscaping welcomes you as you come up to the property. The oversized lot features an RV campsite with a view of the lake. Trees perfect for hammock swinging, a large fire pit, and a dock sized for plenty of water toys complete the picture of this unique lakeside home.
The couple who owns this modern home also happens to be the architect for Charles R. Stinson Architecture + Design and his wife. They wanted their home to feel and function like a vacation beach house, a welcoming place to host family and friends in casual, open, sunlit spaces that felt fun and provided convenient access to the lake. The exterior of the home speaks to the beach-inspired vibe immediately, with ash siding treated with a custom brushed-on stain to give the home a sandy, white-washed color. Windows and doors in whitewashed fir add to the beachy feel.
Inside, the kitchen features custom cabinets in light-washed oak to complement the color palette. Gaggenau appliances, lots of windows, plenty of counter space, and no upper cabinets makes cooking for a group an easy task. Plus, a built-in bar cupboard with a sink makes beverage service convenient for any kind of gathering. Connected to the kitchen is the great room/dining room which is framed by expansive sliding glass doors, giving clear views of Lake Minnetonka. Surprisingly enough, one of the most unique features of the room is the TV, which acts as an art piece featuring a bright beach scene when not in use.
Outside, a thermally treated ash deck surrounds the house for a comfortable indoor/outdoor flow and an outdoor “lake bath” and shower are practical for lots of summer fun without the sandy mess afterwards. Sleepovers with the grandkids are easy, too, with a four season porch that converts from a breakfast room/TV room to an extra sleeping space. The home is also work-from-home friendly, with a raised, shared office space overlooking the great room, allowing the homeowners to feel connected to the main living area even while working.
Other features throughout the home include sandy-colored ash floors that are easy to maintain and can handle in-and-out traffic well, some built-in furniture for an efficient, boat-like feeling, and lighting and technology by Lutron to complete the modern look and feel.
