Elegant & Family Friendly in Edina, courtesy City Homes

The most likely buyers for this five-bedroom, five-bath Edina jewel will be an executive couple with a taste for elegance who like to entertain—but who also have an active lifestyle and active kids. Those are the occupants whom Chris Malooly, general contractor for City Homes Design + Build, LLC, imagined as the project came together.

Kids and adults alike will enjoy the 576-square-foot sport court on the lower level, with its resilient plastic floor and 10-foot ceiling. The sport court is accessed through a separate exercise room off the expansive family-recreation room, which boasts a 14-foot, granite-topped wet bar featuring an illuminated Lustrolite high-gloss acrylic wall that sets off generous gray-enameled cabinetry.

That’s the “active-lifestyle-and-entertainment” part of the package. As for the elegance, it begins at the front door of this 5,365 square-foot house and just keeps coming. Both the living room and the formal dining room off the front entrance are paneled from floor to ceiling in gleaming white enamel, setting off the dark-stained oak floors that continue through most of the house. Built-in bookcases surround the living room’s granite fireplace. Double glass doors open from the dining room to the front porch. In what Malooly calls a bit of Old World detail, the electric outlets in these two rooms are tucked discretely into the baseboards.

Through a well-equipped butler’s pantry off the dining room lies the gourmet kitchen, its big quartzite island providing plenty of stool space (with footrests, no less) for casual meals. Twin Thermador refrigerators, their enameled fronts blending into the walls, bookend a 48-inch chef’s range. Stretching for 9 feet between the refrigerators, above the range, is a gleaming, custom-designed hood of polished stainless steel.

The kitchen opens to a family room with a coffered, enameled ceiling and a second fireplace. A 15-foot span of south-facing glass doors fold aside to open the family room to the back patio and its pergola.

The final showstopper lies upstairs in the master suite. The roomy master bath features walls paneled in gleaming white enamel to a height of 8 feet. Above the paneling, the walls keep climbing to a soaring vaulted ceiling. A custom-designed soaking tub features a surprising exterior of polished stainless steel, echoing the range hood in the kitchen.

When the eventual owners of this house tire of hitting golf balls into a net downstairs in the sport court, they can retire to that upstairs tub to soak in their elegant surroundings.

The upstairs landing can be a sitting or study area.

The master bedroom is an equally soothing retreat.

The elegant master bath boasts a vaulted ceiling and a pedestal tub with a polished stainless exterior.

The lower level features a granite-topped bar, exercise room, and sport court.

The sumptuous living room’s white-enamel paneled walls set off its dark-stained oak floors.

The kitchen gleams, from the polished stainless of the custom stove hood to the quartzite-topped island. An adjacent family room opens to the backyard terrace.
