While some kitchen trends wax and wane (appliance garages and crystal chandeliers come to mind), islands have held steady. Practical for food preparation, storage, seating and a gathering spot, islands may be the biggest reason you can’t get guests out of the kitchen at a party. So versatile, they come in many sizes and configurations as well as a variety of materials and can be built to fit most any kitchen. Here are a few that make a functional and pleasing statement.

This big kitchen island hits lots of trend points with bright blue cabinetry playing off white marble counters, rustic wood accents and gold toned fixtures.

Even a small kitchen can have an island to add work space and storage. Better still if it’s easy to move and/or on wheels. This rustic wood high-top looks great, anchors the room, and adds warmth and character but would be easy to move against a wall, if needed.

Or take a cue from restaurants and use a stainless steel island. Tough and non-porous with clean lines and a surface that gets really clean, it’s a staple of professional kitchens for good reason.

Cement countertops have a cool, contemporary look, are heat-resistant, durable and easy to customize plus they lend a little industrial vibe to any kitchen.
