Located in St. Paul, Down Home DIY takes Pinterest and brings it to life. In their many make-and-take workshop classes, they guide you step-by-step through the process of making those gorgeous conversation pieces that (seemingly) exist only on the World Wide Web.
DIY lover, small business owner, wife and mother of three, Bre-Anna Bass is the brains and beauty behind Down Home DIY.
How did you get started in the DIY industry?
“I grew up in a very talented household. My mom had an eye for design and my father could make her everything she wanted. So, when I see something at a store, I have a vision for transforming it into something one-of-a-kind. Maybe it’s a cute picture frame, but I don’t care for the color. No worries; I’ll paint it the exact color I want. Or a shelf that has potential, but maybe isn’t made out of the best materials. So, I bring it home and use pieces of it, or add to it to make it look more high-end or custom. You can imagine how exhausted my hubby gets with some of my requests.”

What does a typical workshop class look like at your studio?
“Well, you arrive at the studio and, depending on the workshop, you start with staining or painting your boards and then assemble your project with real power tools. After that, you apply your custom stencil and start painting your project. Shortly after you’re done stenciling, you pull off your stencil and your custom project is ready for the finishing touches—sometimes a string of battery-operated lights (like at the Vintage Red Christmas Truck Workshop), but at the very least some wire to hang your project when you get home.”
Where do you find inspiration for your projects?
“Everywhere—from stores, magazines, HGTV, the web, and of course, Pinterest!”
Which seasonal DIY project or trend are you most looking forward to?
“I love a good buffalo plaid and I’m bringing back my ever-so popular Lighted Vintage Red Christmas Truck Workshop!”

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about DIY?
“That they have to be artsy or crafty—not at all! We use stencils, which makes it so fun and easy for all ages and experience. My three-year-old has helped me stencil custom orders, and let me tell you, they turn out like a professional and no one even knows! I may be crafty and have an eye for design, but I’m not an artist.”
