GRAY Home + Lifestyle Launches GRAY Pottery
Thirty years after opening on downtown Excelsior’s Water Street, Gray Gardens Home was purchased last year by mother-daughter duo Dee Dee and Chloe Lappen. They rechristened it GRAY Home + Lifestyle, and along with the new name, they gave the storefront a fresh, modern look, and filled it with a thoughtful selection of goods for the home, kitchen, garden, and wardrobe.
Recently, the store debuted GRAY Pottery, its own collection of ceramics. The 16-piece line of dishes, serveware, and even a coffee pour-over features soft, natural curves and classic shapes—an ideal combination with the store’s selection of modern wood, brass, and copper tabletop goods and a natural extension of the store’s selection of artisan-made, small-batch, and specialty-oriented goods.
GRAY Pottery is just the latest example of the au courant movement toward modern ceramics. In recent years, the ancient craft has been in the midst of a comeback—The New York Times style section and Vogue magazine recently devoted coverage to the trend, and handmade ceramics are showing up at high-end fashion retailers such as Steven Alan and modern home goods chains including West Elm.
The collection was designed by GRAY and manufactured by Minnesota-based heritage maker Red Wing Stoneware Co., founded in 1877 in Red Wing, Minnesota. “We love the heritage behind them,” says Chloe, “so it was a no brainer to ask them to produce it for us.”
