Black Friday is best known as the day major retailers offer serious savings on the latest gadgets, clothing, and toys. But over the past several years, small, local businesses have been getting into the mix with shopping events throughout the weekend that encourages shoppers to put their money into small businesses instead.

The movement started with the advent of Small Business Saturday in 2010, which was originally founded by American Express to support small businesses around the country. Local retailers have carried forth the initiative with special shopping events and deals the day after Black Friday every year. Many also have deals throughout the weekend, including “Plaid Friday,” an alternative campaign to Black Friday that started five years ago in Oakland, Calif., to encourage consumers to put their holiday gift dollars back into the community—and don plaid, of course.
