Stop organizing the bathroom (again), take a brief pause from paging through the latest issue of Midwest Home for inspiration, and step away from your New Year’s remodeling plans. Constant searching, planning, and project prepping will leave you feeling drained and exhausted—but just one afternoon at the Guthrie Theater is sure to rejuvenate, inspire, and get you ready to keep plugging away on your latest at-home project.

Just like your home, the Guthrie holds an abundance of spectacular things.Yes, we could mention its impressive architecture, unforgettable facilities, and remarkable productions, but we’d barely scratch the surface. You hear “this” and “that” about the popular downtown Minneapolis theater, but far too often, you won’t hear about the Guthrie’s successful educational program.

The Open House event provides the perfect opportunity to learn more. In a nutshell, the Guthrie will host preview classes of their upcoming 2019 winter offerings. There’s truly a little bit of everything for everyone—whether you’re a newbie ready (or nervous) to submerse yourself into the world of theater or a seasoned vet looking to dust up your acting and dancing skills.

Embrace the newness of 2019 and throw yourself out there. And who knows? Maybe you’ll discover a new, long-term hobby in the meantime.

The class-packed schedule goes a little like this:

1:30 p.m. Theater Basics Workshop

Participants explore the fundamentals of acting, create a foundation for continued training, and learn about improvising, theater vocabulary, and performing for an audience.

2–3 p.m. || Workshop Classes

  • Musical Theater Audition Prep Workshop

This musical theater dance class gives you the lowdown on preparing for auditions. Participants warm up, complete a sequence of strength and conditioning exercises, and learn choreography designed to imitate an audition. The best part? There’s no dance experience necessary.

  • Presentation and Communication Skills Workshop

If dance isn’t your thing, you can gain confidence and learn skills/strategies to nail your next interview or presentation. This class uses theater techniques to help participants become their best self during high-stakes opportunities.

2:30–3 p.m. Backstage Tour

2–4 p.m. Headshot and Resume Sessions

This session is (unfortunately) full, but you can join the waitlist by emailing classes@guthrietheater.org.

3:30–4:30 p.m. || Workshop Classes

  • Slay! Workshop

This class preview invites participants to let go and reconnect with their true self through fun choreography, stellar grooves, and all things dance. Again, no experience necessary.

  • Theater Basics Workshop (see above)

  • Musical Theater Audition Prep Workshop

Instead of musical theater dance, this workshop is for the singers of Minneapolis. Participants prepare a ballad, an accompanist provides support, and singers workshop their numbers and receive feedback from a teaching artist and actor.

4:30–5 p.m. Backstage Tour

Sounds cool, huh? We think so, too. It’s the perfect “day off” from your regular dose of interior design, building, and remodeling, and an even better opportunity to try something new in 2019 (and maybe you can even snag some design inspiration to take back home with you.)

Sunday, 1:30-5 p.m. @ Guthrie Theater, 818 S. Second St., Minneapolis. Learn more at facebook.com.
