Now in its 28th year, Art-A-Whirl, the largest open studio tour in the country, takes over Northeast Minneapolis May 19-21. One of spring’s outstanding social and art-shopping events, Art-A-Whirl brings together art enthusiasts and collectors with member artists of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (NEMAA) for a weekend of patronage and play.
The artist directory is a great place to start planning the weekend. With more than 1,200 NEMAA member artists, galleries, and businesses participating in Art-A-Whirl across all of Northeast Minneapolis at more than 70 locations, planning your visits is key—and this map will help.
Another way to plan the day is by selecting not-to-be-missed free art demos, interactive activities, and family friendly offerings at galleries and studios by browsing here. From botanical printing demos to coloring contests, bracelet-making workshops to book signings, CNC (Computerized Numeric Control) demos to cutting board classes, there’s something for everyone in the family.
Paintings and ceramics, cross-stitch and jewelry, furniture and glassware, textiles and kitchen ware, tile and shelving—every object and work of art is handcrafted and unique. The sheer amount of creativity can be overwhelming, so plan for stops at live music concerts and refreshments at local cafes, restaurants, and breweries.
The event is free and open to the public. Friday, May 19, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, May 20, noon to 8 p.m.; Sunday, May 21, noon to 5 p.m.
