The house slips neatly into its Edina neighborhood.
Luxury doesn’t always mean large. In recent years, homeowners have begun to recognize the value in well-designed houses that fit on city lots, rather than on golf courses. Which is why TJB Homes decided to build a 4,700-square-foot spec house in an established Edina neighborhood this spring. Inside, there’s comfort, style, and efficiency. Outside, there are walkable tree-lined streets.
A coffered ceiling in the living room helps define discrete spaces in the main floor’s open floor plan.
A gabled roof and a stone-and-wood exterior give the home considerable curb appeal, inviting visitors to knock on the 8-foot-tall front door. The refreshing interiors are accented with dark wood, deep gray, and light enameled trim, rather than the painted wood and bright white that have been so common in homes for the past few years. A coffered ceiling helps distinguish the conjoined kitchen, living, and dining areas. The kitchen is furnished with high-end Thermador appliances and an island topped with quartz. A walk-in pantry and a mudroom that lead to the garage are just steps away. And much of the main floor has a view of the backyard through a full wall of windows. A fireplace adds coziness to the great room, and a beadboard ceiling in the den creates a sense of warmth—a touch of natural wood.
A quartz-topped island offers plenty of room for prep work and seating. The pantry and mudroom are just around the corner.
The second floor contains a loft/lounge area, three kids’ bedrooms with private window benches, and an owners’ suite with laundry, wardrobe space, and a luxurious spa-like bath. Decorative tile work gives the bathrooms throughout the house a unique aesthetic, and the master bath has a vaulted ceiling, as well as a soaking tub and rain shower.
The master bedroom includes a private seating alcove and luxurious bath.
In the lower level, relaxation is the name of the game. Generous use of wood and stone give the space a masculine feel, and guests can help themselves to a snack or drink at the sports-themed bar while watching the game on a wall-mounted flat-screen TV. Meantime, there’s room for the owners’ private reserve in a knotty pine- and hickory-lined wine cellar tucked under the stairs.
The lower level is all about kicked-back entertainment, with a rec room, wine cellar, and bar with a built-in draft beer dispenser.
“This is a normal house for a normal American family,” says TJB president Tom Budzynski. “It’s not too big. It’s comfortable. And it’s in a nice community.”
A built-in buffet offers plenty of handy storage in the dining room.
