Custom Frames by Framebridge

Anyone who’s ever brought in a piece of artwork or photograph to a frame shop has faced the daunting wall of frame choices and sticker shock and awe at the cost of a custom made frame. On the other end of the spectrum are super affordable ready-made options at Target, Pottery Barn, etc., but styles and sizes are limited and don’t work for everything. Maybe that’s why so many homes have bare walls.

Framebridge saw an opportunity and like other category disruptors (Warby Parker, Zappo’s), they set out to change the way consumers frame by moving it online. Their easy-to-use website walks users through a three step process: (1) customers upload or send in their artwork or photograph (with an insured pre-paid mailer), (2) select the frame they want from 40 chic options (or have a Framebridge designer make a recommendation) and, (3) they custom mat and frame the piece by hand and mail it back to the customer in 3-10 days. All the frames are wood and made in the U.S.A. The total cost is much less expensive than traditional custom framing—generally $39-$189. One caveat. Framebridge uses acrylic instead of glass. Acrylic, which they say is as clear as glass, actually costs more than glass and protects the art from UV light better. Of course, it’s also safer to mail acrylic.A person putting a frame on a picture at Framebridge.

They also offer framing for those little square Instagram photos.  And what do you know, snaps of gallery walls filled with these mini frames are starting to pop up on, yep, Instagram.
