Type of remodeling project: This project was a down-to-the-studs major remodel and addition, converting a small single story house into an open first floor with a master suite and guest room upstairs. Another key feature of the project was the addition of a studio for the homeowner’s creative space.
Before: The client loved the location, feel, and history of the home, but wanted an updated space with more natural light, a greater connection to the outdoors, and an infusion of Zen and Feng shui.
Remodeling timeline: 12 months
Challenges: The relatively low bearing capacity of the soil required the use of helical piers, extending beyond the original footprint. This constraint became an opportunity to cantilever the client’s studio out into the backyard.
Unique elements: Tall corner windows in the open staircase, a curved entry soffit with inset “moon light,” wall niches, and an intricate stained glass window.
After: This home, designed with clean lines and warm, natural materials, reflects the dynamic and artistic character of the client, providing a welcoming and healing space in which to live and work.
