When remodeling a current home or building a new one, it’s fun to dream. So, let’s go to this dreamland and imagine what it would be like if you had an unlimited budget. Or, to bring it back down to earth, if you are willing to splurge on something for your home, what should it be? We asked two area designers about the luxe requests they’ve been noticing more frequently and what things homeowners should consider putting in their homes if they dare to dream.
First, Charlie Simmons, founding principal of Charlie & Co. Design Ltd., has been noticing an uptick in the “greening” of clients’ homes. “Usually, this is in the form of a combination of exterior insulation panels, triple-pane windows, geothermal heating/cooling, and solar panels,” he says. And within that same vein, Ryan Smolik, director of architecture and design at Lake Country Builders, has noted clients are expressing a “strong interest in wellness and self-improvement.” This can include things like a well-appointed, expansive home gym or a space devoted to recovery that often includes a sauna (big enough for yoga), cold plunge, and large spa.
Simmons has observed this trend as well, saying, “We’re seeing a request for saunas, both traditional and infrared, in owners’ bathrooms.” But “the most frequent request with consideration of today’s hybrid work environments is not just one well-equipped home office, but often another room dedicated toward a library, like space for studying or conducting meetings,” Smolik shares.
The bottom line is that people nowadays are equating luxury with functionality, so if you’re going to go for broke when it comes to your home’s design, opt for something that suits your needs and even helps you better yourself.
