Rustic River Views Embrace Nature in Hudson

With floor-to-ceiling windows, a rooftop deck, and multiple porches, this waterfront home in Hudson, Wisconsin, opens itself up to nature

To keep the height of the living room of this Hudson home from appearing monolithic, a white ledge divides the space while drawing attention to the room’s inverted corners.

As longtime Hudson residents who enjoyed lake living but longed to build a home on the St. Croix River, these homeowners knew exactly what they wanted—and Divine Custom Homes delivered. “They weren’t looking for a huge house,” recalls Jeff Warren, president of Divine Custom Homes. “They also wanted a blend of rustic and contemporary styles, and a home rich in detail that would fully embrace ‘river life.’”

The small wooded lot the couple purchased presented some design challenges, but Divine Custom Homes made it work in stride and skillfully highlighted the scenery that drew the couple to the setting in the first place. Nestled into the trees, the 2,932-square-foot home features floor-to-ceiling glass with expansive river views in the great room (a flexible space combining living and dining areas), a 500-square-foot ground floor, and a main-level Sunspace porch, complete with an Alpine Ledge-stone fireplace to make it a three-season-plus space. Moreover, the 500-square-foot rooftop deck provides treetop panoramas of the river and surrounding area (along with a gas fireplace so the new owners can enjoy the landscape year round).

The exterior of the house shows the homeowners’ appreciation of nature even if you can’t see a full view of the porch and deck—one look at the wooden garage door and stone columns says it all.

The interior is no less spectacular. A fireplace with a full wall of cultured stone anchors the living room, while columns and soffits add architectural interest to the space. Across from an informal dining area is a small buffet/wet bar for entertaining, plus a table on the screen porch can always be ushered inside for added seating. “That flexibility freed the clients from needing additional square footage for a formal dining room,” Warren says.

A floor-to-ceiling stone wall brings nature’s rough-hewn edges inside, juxtaposed by black-trimmed windows and a sleek, minimalist fireplace.

An oak stairway with a custom metal railing leads to the second level, where you can catch a sneak peek of the rooftop deck through the glass door. The main-level master suite’s vaulted ceiling allows natural light and river views to fill the airy space, and the ensuite bathroom features luxurious white tile, a shower with a bench and decorative tile work, and a freestanding soaker tub for ultimate relaxation. The home also includes two additional bedrooms and baths.

Henri Interiors in St. Paul provided the clients with a cohesive design scheme throughout the home, emphasizing a grounded airiness to match the views. In the kitchen, for instance, white oak floors complement the custom-designed, flush-style kitchen cabinetry, and the latter’s dark paint finish contrasts beautifully with the gray honeycomb backsplash and bright wood accent on the stove hood. The kitchen appliances also have paneled fronts, which add to the home’s picturesque charm—perfectly fulfilling the clients’ request for a rustic river aesthetic.

The main living areas of this home bring in nature-inspired materials with a honeycomb kitchen backsplash that evokes the surface of river rocks.
