New Online Kitchen Remodeling Course by Cambria and HGTV

If there’s a kitchen remodel in your future, you’ve no doubt collected a lot of ideas about everything from countertops to cabinetry. Before you pull the trigger, Cambria, the local manufacturer of quartz countertops, and HGTV have some homework for you: Take a free online course that walks you through the kitchen remodeling process, start to finish.

The nine-lesson course, “Dream. Plan. Do. – The Inspired Kitchen,” hosted by Scott McGillivray and Jane Lockhart, provides advice and insights from a contractor and a designer’s perspective. McGillivray, star of HGTV’s Income Property, real estate investor, and contractor, takes on an instructor’s role in the course. He is ably assisted by Lockhart, founder and principal designer at Jane Lockhart Interior Design, a leading Toronto designer. Together, they cover the bases—planning, designing, and executing a kitchen remodel from scratch.

The free course is available through the digital education platform, The Big Know. Digital is a new medium for McGillivray, who launched “Dream. Plan. Do.” in June at the Minneapolis Cambria Gallery. “It was out of my wheelhouse, but it was fun to do something new,” he says. The course aims to help consumers think like designers, and learn about properly planning everything from the work triangle to cabinetry, countertops, and lighting. He also emphasizes how to make smart decisions that will pay off when you sell your home.

The aim isn’t to teach DIYers, but to build confidence in consumers working with professionals. If you begin a kitchen remodel without knowing what you want to do—even if you work with a contractor, designer, or architect—you’ll get the kitchen they want, not the one you want, says McGillivray, adding, “The more prepared and savvy you are, the less it’s going to cost you.”
