Modernism is Alive and Well on the 2018 Homes by Architects Tour

Modernism may be over a century old, but its unornamented style, cubic, asymmetrical shapes, and large expanses of glass continue to increase in popularity around Minnesota. Many homes featured on this year’s Homes by Architects Tour show that modernism is alive and well, and the many ways modern homes can fold into a diverse set of natural landscapes.

Sited at the top of a plateau in Deephaven, Home 8 is an expression of “organic minimalism,” designed to give a family with small children a modern haven where indoor and outdoor spaces blend. The efficient home incorporates outdoor materials indoors to complete the naturalist look.

Home 10 is a re-imagined midcentury modern classic, situated on a quiet suburban lake in Plymouth. Modern touches enhance the original layout, and innovative window and exotic wood treatments help create a strong organic connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Home 13 is the ultimate modern, multi-generational home, allowing parents, grown children, and grandchildren to live together, while maintaining separate spaces. Located in Golden Valley, the home takes advantage of cubic asymmetry to twist on its axis and take advantage of all aspects of the property, creating multiple habitats that offer a variety of space, light, and privacy.
