I’m not a great cook, but I love to entertain. We entertain often, nearly every Friday night for Shabbat dinner and any excuse to have a party is a good one. Hanukkah, pre-wedding, pre-Bat Mitzvah, the Emmys, the Oscars, Super Bowl, Tuesday—you name it, we’re probably having people over for it.
Our new house isn’t big, and most of the main floor is the kitchen. The design goals were consistent with the rest of the house: modern, clean lines, efficient, lots of storage, and no clutter!
I fell in love with Crystal Cabinets while wandering around the Partners 4 Design showroom at International Market Square. They can custom manufacture any style. Billy and Kyle of Billy Beson Co., and Nicole Sirek (our kitchen designer at Partners 4) decided on a high gloss, white flat-panel front with a seeded-glass insert. Cabinets have come a long way since my mom redesigned her kitchen in the ’80s. Other than the cabinets, some of my favorite features are the backsplash; the giant center island; the hands-free Moen faucet; this sexy refrigerator—yes, I just called our refrigerator sexy—and the lighting by Masiero. OK, so I love it all!
Nicole had her hands full designing our kitchen because we keep Kosher (we follow Jewish dietary laws). That means we separate serving and eating meat and dairy together in the same meal. It also means two sets of dishes, silverware, and pots and pans. We needed lots of storage space. With the entire back wall of cabinets, the island, and open storage in the pantry, we had plenty. We also needed two dishwashers, which fit perfectly under the island, and a second fridge, which found a home in the pantry.
The kitchen is beyond my wildest expectations. Everything is beautifully designed and functional. I cook a lot more in my new kitchen than ever before, and the kids tell me that they actually like my cooking!
