Custom-designed for a family of four by Anchor Builders, this Linden Hills oasis seamlessly blends classic farmhouse details with modern elements. The finished product? A functional home with a thoughtful balance of indoor-outdoor living and unique features that make for a standout space.
Jackie Thein, the lead designer at Anchor Builders, says the homeowners’ ultimate goal was crafting a home tailored to their lifestyle—an abode with both work-from-home capabilities and the ability to entertain family and friends.
From a design perspective, though, the homeowners loved the modern farmhouse style. (The home’s coastal inspiration and aspects came about naturally as the homeowners’ tastes evolved.) This can be seen in the lighter color palette, flat-black metal accents, and white oak flooring. Other wood elements throughout the home include custom beams by Manomin Resawn Timbers and cabinets—including a one-of-a-kind cigar humidor—by Modern Design Cabinetry.
Entertaining in the home is a breeze thanks to the main level’s indoor-outdoor concept with a screened porch that features a double-sided fireplace. The family room in the basement is another cozy gathering place with a wet bar and Sub-Zero wine fridge, as well as heated, polished concrete floors and a 9-foot custom concrete shelf, designed by St. Paul-based Stone Tec.
Building during the peak of the pandemic also influenced the home’s design. With COVID-19, a new need emerged for a space dedicated to distance learning. The concept worked brilliantly in the second-level bonus space with custom workstations, made complete with built-in shelving. “We were able to make sure that the spaces were tailored not only to their taste but also how their family was going to truly live in them,” says Rachel Burbul, another Anchor designer.
“We are not in the business of creating cookie-cutter homes,” says Thein. “We really want to make sure everything is designed perfectly for their needs and wants.”
