For more than 20 years, the Minnesota chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID MN) has hosted the ASID MN Sample Sale, the Twin Cities’ largest designer furnishing sample sale. The annual sale draws thousands of shoppers to take advantage of discounts of 50 to 80 percent off a broad selection of high-end lighting, furniture, rugs, fine art, and home décor.

The event takes place at the International Market Square, considered the largest home and commercial interior design marketplace in the Upper Midwest. This weekend’s sale is spread throughout more than 30 of the building’s showrooms, many of which aren’t usually open to the public.

Due to the broad size and scope of the sale, it’s helpful to have an idea of what you’re getting into. Here are some tips on shopping the sale from Jacqueline Cox, ASID MN committee co-chair and owner of IMS showroom, Tapis Design.

What tips do you have for shopping the sale?

“In addition to furniture and rugs, some showrooms will be offering frames, mirrors, fine art, and bedding. Consider using the beautiful fabrics and accessories for an easier way to refresh your space—without breaking the bank. One of the best parts of the Sample Sale is you don’t have to be an interior designer to participate. Even participating showrooms where sales normally require an interior designer are offering select items for public purchase. Don’t be afraid to explore the full building—be sure to visit every corner of IMS. Showrooms will be open on each floor, so visit all levels, otherwise you may miss some of the best deals.”

What are the best times to shop?

“There is no need to arrive early, since preview shopping is not available. Sales begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, September 29—and that is a great time to arrive if you want first pick of the Sample Sale. To avoid crowds, come to shop on Saturday, too. There are still many items available without as many shoppers in the way.”

What is unique about this sample sale vs. other furniture sample sales in the Twin Cities?

“The ASID MN Sample Sale only happens once a year and is believed to be the biggest Twin Cities sale featuring high-end home décor and home furnishings. It’s a unique opportunity to visit the historic IMS building [formerly the home of the Northwestern Knitting Co.], peruse beautiful design work and items for purchase, and buy select items at a substantial discount. With more than 145 showrooms, studios, shops and galleries, International Market Square is the largest home and commercial interior design marketplace in the Upper Midwest.”

Some additional tips:

  • Skip the ATM and bring your credit card. Cash and checks are not accepted.
  • Don’t worry about renting a UHaul. Delivery service is available for an additional charge (but you can bring your finds with you if you like).
  • Take in the sights. While you’re shopping, be sure to check out the 1905-era building’s iconic double-helix staircase, an original element of the historic Northwestern Knitting manufacturing facility that once was headquarters to Munsingwear. It’s located at the far end of the building closest to Lyndale Avenue.

The 2017 ASID MN Sample Sale takes place on Friday, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. @ International Market Square, 275 Market St, Minneapolis, 612-338-6250, mn.asid.org. Admission and parking are free.
