This 18-year-old home had a lot going for it—an open layout, stainless steel appliances, and expansive windows—but with blonde maple flooring and cabinetry, brass hardware, and a pastel color palette, it never fully left the 90s.
Not only did the interior look dated, but the existing space wasn’t living up to its full potential.
“The original floor plan felt claustrophobic,” says Andy Schrader, president, Schrader & Companies. “And some spaces weren’t being used at all.”
With retirement on the horizon, these empty-nesters wanted to do more entertaining—in a space they loved. They hired Schrader & Companies after seeing examples of their work, liking their design/build approach, and appreciating their attention to detail.
After changing the flow of the main level by relocating the kitchen to the center of the house and adding a steel beam between the kitchen and family room, Schrader and his team custom-stained the maple floors, replaced the low-grade countertops with Carrera marble, replaced the blonde cabinetry with white, and incorporated 100-year-old hand-carved teak corbels from Nepal into both the center island and arched French doors leading to the walk-in pantry.
Schrader worked with Wayzata-based Julian Interiors to breathe new life into the Long Lake kitchen, complete with brightly painted walls (“Soulful Blue” by Sherwin Williams, to be exact), Carrera marble subway tiles, and pendant lights, giving the beautiful new space a completely modern edge.
