As wallpaper continues to have a moment in home design, a new Minneapolis design firm is offering its own unique twist on the genre: custom, hand-painted wallpaper. She She is a collaboration between illustrator Kate Worum and interior designer Jennifer Jorgensen that utilizes the pair’s respective skill sets to bring more art to the interior design world.
The duo created their first wallpaper together last year when Jorgensen was tapped to design a room for the American Craft Council Show. Afterward, she suggested the idea of hand-painted wallpaper to clients who had hired her for design work in their homes.
To create their designs, Jorgensen and Worum—a print and pattern designer for Target who is debuting an exclusive collection of prints for CB2 this spring—begin by sketching a repeating image around a motif before projecting the final design on the wall. Then they trace the pattern by hand directly on the wall and start painting, leaving a little bit of room in the design to give it a more custom, organic feel. So far, they’ve been commissioned by a mix of commercial and residential clients, including St. Paul event space Paikka, Chicago-based brand Delta Faucets, and a home dining room in Kenwood. This summer, their wall designs and textiles will be on view in an installation at Ditch Gallery in Minneapolis.
For now, She She’s designs are offered only on a custom basis, although they plan to have a portfolio collection of wallpaper prints online by the end of 2017. Eventually, they want to put their designs on everything from throw pillows to area rugs. “I love the opportunity to transform a room with our total vision,” says Jorgensen, “with pattern being one of the driving forces.”
