Art in the Home

“Living with art is good for our souls,” says Lisa Peck, interior designer and owner of LiLu Interiors in Minneapolis. “Having not only beautiful artwork on our walls, but also artisan-made furnishings and objects that bring joy adds layers of experience within the home that can uplift the soul in ways mass-produced objects may not.”

With those guiding principles infusing her award-winning work, Peck was asked to curate Art in the Home this year, an exhibition at Artistry in the Bloomington Center for the Arts. The biennial exhibition (which began in 2008), showcases locally hand-crafted furniture and home accessories used to decorate room vignettes designed by five Twin Cities’ interior designers.

In selecting the designers, Peck says, “I considered colleagues who incorporate artwork into their designs and care about our local artists.” She selected Colleen Slack of Fox Interiors; Sheree Vincent of Fusion Designed; Martina Willegalle of Designs by Martina; Jean Hoffman of Chester-Hoffman and Associates; and Christine Frisk of InUnison Design.

“These designers will provide insights into how a room can be composed with local, artisan-made furnishings and objects,” Peck says. “Visitors to the exhibition will walk away with the ability to envision—rather than a me-too, mass-produced interior—something that truly reflects who they are intellectually and emotionally.” Furniture, home goods, textiles, rugs, and artwork will be used in the creation of dining, living, and kitchen spaces, with one designer doing a local take on the Danish concept of hygge.

“I’ve never done anything like this before,” says Peck, who also designs fabrics, wallcoverings, and rugs under the moniker Sylvie and Mira. “Which is why the opportunity to curate this exhibition speaks to me, too.”

Art in the Home runs February 16-April 13. An opening reception will be held February 16, 6–8 p.m. Peck leads a panel discussion with the participating designers on March 27 at 7 p.m., which will cover tips on incorporating original art and hand-crafted furnishings into home décor. Related events include the City of Bloomington’s Home Improvement Fair (and Mini-Art Mart) on February 24.
