ASID Designer Kitchen Tour
Designers Linda Engler, ASID, and Jenn Taft, Engler Studio
When visiting this project on the ASID Designer Kitchen Tour April 22 and 23, pay close attention to the table. It was designed as part of a two-tiered kitchen island, made by Engler Studio’s cabinet shop and finished by a talented local artist. It connects to the kitchen island, allowing for stools around three sides, creating a more conversational group setting than the typical configuration of placing stools in a row next to one another.
Other “outside-the-box” elements include creating vignettes within the space, to keep your eye searching for the next surprise. One wall of cerused oak cabinetry was built in a different construction style, with different doors and hardware than the white cabinetry on the opposite wall. “We like to incorporate the unexpected into our projects,” explains Jenn Taft, an interior designer with Engler Studio. Another example of this philosophy is the beautiful tiled marble mosaic wall.
Q&A with designer Jenn Taft:
Where do you typically find design inspiration?
We love traveling to other cities and digging through antique stores, galleries, and shops. This is where we find some of our most unique pieces that can inspire the whole palette or add that final finishing touch. We also browse design blogs, websites, and magazines.
How do you guide homeowners to help find their own design style when they aren’t really sure what their style is?
I pay attention to what our clients wear—do they wear color and patterns or is their style classic and tailored? This can be a great indication of how formal or casual they are and the personality they want to infuse into their living spaces.
