ASID Designer Kitchen Tour
Designed by Jenn Taft • Engler Studio

Ever wonder how interior designers live in their own spaces? This is your chance to see firsthand. This kitchen, on the ASID Designer Kitchen Tour April 22 and 23, belongs to designer Jenn Taft of Engler Studio. The original kitchen, with just enough room for a small table and limited cabinetry and countertops, was reconfigured into a galley kitchen—nearly tripling the counter space and gaining cabinetry—by removing the peninsula and shifting appliances. A hall coat closet was converted into a pantry, appliance locations shifted, and unnecessary walkways were eliminated to improve the traffic flow and allow for the addition of a breakfast bar.

As the color palette came together, “walnut cabinets became a must-have,” says Jenn. “I really liked how much warmth the walnut added to the space and how clean and modern it feels.” The problem, though, was that she didn’t like how the existing hardwood floors looked in contrast with the walnut. In the end, she chose cork flooring for the color, texture, and fact that it seemed “appropriate to the mid-century era of our 1959 rambler.” Besides the stylish aesthetic and additional room for more cooks in the space, Jenn says she loves having drawers in base cabinets rather than doors, saving time when searching for that bowl/spoon/lid, etc. (and helping her stay organized).

Q&A with designer Jenn Taft:

Where do you typically find design inspiration?
We love traveling to other cities and digging through antique stores, galleries, and shops.  This is where we find some of our most unique pieces that can inspire the whole palette or add that final finishing touch.  We also browse design blogs, websites, and magazines.

What would you tell someone who dislikes their kitchen but is too intimidated to hire a professional to help?
Remodeling a kitchen is expensive, so you want to make sure you get it right. A professional will help you think outside the box, maximize your space, and expand your horizons with new and innovative products.
