We say “Cheers!” to Target’s latest designer collaboration. Kate Arends, Minneapolis designer, creative consultant, and the mind behind the wildly popular design blog Wit & Delight, was plucked from the top ranks of Pinterest for a plum partnership with her “favorite hometown retailer.” She hopes her suite of entertaining pieces launching this fall “will bring people together to enjoy craft beer and simple snacks in an easy and effortless way.” An inside look at the collection’s creation:
What inspired you?
The idea of spontaneous get-togethers with friends. I envisioned a warm social gathering centered on artisan food and craft beer. The collection reflects my sense of humor but still captures a sense of accessible elegance.

How did your product design evolve?
I worked very closely with Target to identify themes, color palettes, patterns, and pieces that influence and reflect my personal style.
Once I had the theme figured out, I decided to play up an interactive tasting environment and draw inspiration from fractal patterns in a more modern way. The color palette is grounded in black and white, and then highlighted with green and gold tones inspired by vintage bottles.

What does entertaining well mean to you?
Creating an experience that brings friends and family joy. Orchestrating moments for people to connect, laugh, and share—that’s why I love to play hostess. My most treasured memories are most often made around a table.

What’s your favorite piece (or two) in the collection?
That’s a hard question! I’d have to say the ceramic serving platters, the tea towels, and the pencils. I love that the product line is both playful and versatile!
