Glass work by Michael Tonder
North Shore lovers have long known they can hit two attractions with one fall road trip: dazzling autumn colors along the big lake and the annual tour of artists’ studios known as Crossing Borders Studio Tour.
The colors will still awe, but this September, two tours replace Crossing Borders: Cooter, Tonder and Friends Art Tour, September 29 – October 1; and Art Along the Lake: Fall Art Tour, September 29 – October 8.
Cooter, Tonder and Friends takes place at two studios and invites tour-goers to watch artists at work. Michael Tonder, one of the host artists who creates art from kiln-formed glass, says visiting artists’ studios and seeing their art processes lends a deeper understanding of the work. The tour will feature glassblowers, leatherworkers, jewelers, and weavers among other artists.
Art Along the Lake includes numerous studios in Cook County and will feature metal sculptors, oil painters, woodblock print artists, and more.
Both tours are free of charge and begin at 10 a.m. every day of the tour. Art will be for sale during both tours.
