If you’re interested in a mattress you saw online, Sleep Sherpa is the place to try it out.

Over the past few years, the bed-in-a-box trend has taken over the mattress industry, allowing consumers to buy mattresses online that are shipped directly to their door. Often times this type of mattress purchasing leads to sleep issues or the hassle of returns since customers are not able to go to a store to test the mattresses before buying.

Sleep Sherpa, a mattress showroom in Edina, is looking to make it easier for consumers who want to purchase these often more affordable mattresses online, but who still want to ensure that the mattress they are getting is right for them. The showroom allows customers to make more informed decisions about the mattresses, which benefits the online companies since fewer returns are being made.

Stemming from founder Ben Trapskin’s own frustrations with buying mattresses online as well as sleep issues he was experiencing at the time, Sleep Sherpa was originally a website created in 2015 to review online-only mattresses. “The culmination of frustrations led me to create a blog where I could write about mattresses I slept on. Companies started to reach out to me to send products to review, from there things have grown exponentially,” Trapskin says.

The website’s popularity increased and led to the creation of the 1,500-square-foot showroom, which is slowly picking up traffic since its opening in November 2016. Around 100,000 people view the website a day, compared with the 30 to 40 people who visit the showroom daily.

Trapskin says when he realized people were hesitant to buy the online-only mattresses he was reviewing because they couldn’t feel them, he saw a way to kill two birds with one stone. With the opening of the showroom, not only is he helping consumers to test the mattresses they are looking at online, but he is able to get the mattresses he was reviewing for the website out of his house.

The showroom carries 15 brands of mattresses including Nectar, Nest and Brentwood Home. People want to compare online-only brands against each other and his store is the only place to do that, Trapskin says. The concept appeals not only to the millennials he expected to visit, but to baby boomers as well.
