This simple but clever shelf in a new home outside Stillwater is the epitome of convenient kitchen garden. It’s in a modern farmhouse built by Derrick Custom Homes of New Richmond, Wisconsin, and designed by Annie Tropple of Home Design by Annie in Edina. This light and airy kitchen is the happy ending to a disaster that began when the owners’ previous home burned to the ground. Luckily, the family of six, along with their two cats and dogs, escaped injury and began from scratch. Treading the line between the wife’s love of modern and the husband’s preference for traditional, Tropple designed a kitchen with white-enameled cabinetry and white oak flooring. Contrast comes from the black granite perimeter countertops, hardware, and lights. Tying the two together is the backsplash of hand-painted clay tiles with touches of saffron yellow, blue-green, and ivory by Tabarka.
